Physical Processes behind the Morphological Hubble Sequence
نویسنده
چکیده
The study of formation and evolution of galaxies is reviewed, with emphasis on the physical factors which are important to understand the origin of the Hubble sequence. We concentrate on predictions of the hierarchical Cold Dark Matter (CDM) scenario and their confrontation with observations. The mass assembling of the CDM halos, the baryonic processes within them, and the evolution of disks and spheroids are described. The successes and shortcomings are discussed. Disk evolution seems to be a quiescent and extended process driven by the cosmological initial conditions, while spheroids are formed probably in violent events, where several astrophysical processes are competing.

THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES: Perspectives on the Origin of the Hubble Sequence
I review recent observational progress concerning the evolution of the morphological distribution of galaxies in the rich cluster environment and in the faint field population. By coupling HST imagery with ground-based spectroscopic diagnostics, evidence accumulates that galaxy morphology can be a transient phenomenon reflecting various changes in the star formation rate. Possible physical proc...
متن کاملQuantifying Morphological Evolution from Low to High Redshifts
Establishing the morphological history of ordinary galaxies was one of the original goals for the Hubble Space Telescope, and remarkable progress toward achieving this this goal has been made. How much of this progress has been at the expense of the Hubble sequence? As we probe further out in redshift space, it seems time to re-examine the underlying significance of Hubble’s tuning fork in ligh...
متن کاملOn the Generation of the Hubble Sequence through an Internal Secular Dynamical Process
The secular evolution process, which slowly transforms the morphology of a galaxy over its lifetime, could naturally account for observed properties of the great majority of physical galaxies if both stellar and gaseous accretion processes are taken into account. As an emerging paradigm for galaxy evolution, its dynamical foundation had been established in the past few years, and its observatio...
متن کاملSecular Evolution of Spiral Galaxies
It is now a well established fact that galaxies undergo significant morphological transformation during their lifetimes, manifesting as an evolution along the Hubble sequence from the late to the early Hubble types. The physical processes commonly believed to be responsible for this observed evolution trend, i.e. the major and minor mergers, as well as gas accretion under a barred potential, th...
متن کاملPerspectives in Physical Morphology
In the first section of these lectures I outline the classical framework of the Hubble classification system. Because of space limitations I will focus on points of controversy concerning the physical interpretation of the Hubble sequence, showing how morphological ideas shape our understanding of galaxy evolution. I will then present an overview of the remarkable progress made in recent years ...
